Top 25: Lowest insurance group cars

As the cost of motoring continues to rise, many of us are looking to ways to save cash. And one option is to choose a car that sits in the lowest insurance groups.

There are plenty of capable models to choose from that will help keep a lid on costs. So we've picked the 25 lowest rated cars currently on sale.

Looking to save? We have a full guide on getting cheap car insurance.

1

Ford Ka+ - Group 1E

Despite the name, the Ka+ has actually more in common with the Fiesta rather than the Ka it effectively replaces. It's based on the previous Fiesta and so is a proper five-seater that's surprisingly good to drive with impressive ride quality - not something that can be said for all hatchbacks this size.

Just one version sits in Group 1 - the basic Studio version with the lower powered 70PS version of the sole 1.0-litre engine. That does mean steel wheels and no air conditioning but it does at least have Bluetooth, electric windows and mirrors plus Hill-Start Assist.

Nissan Micra - 1E

It's fair to say the previous Micra was a bit dull. Well, very dull actually. So Nissan has made some big changes for this latest generation. Gone is the bland bubble styling, replaced be something far more striking. It's not just the looks though as this Micra is also very good to drive.

Despite all these changes it remains very cheap to run. As evident in its insurance ratings. The entry-level 1.0-litre engine is Group 1 - in either Visia, Visia+ or Acenta models. Nothing else this size is rated as low.

Volkswagen Up – Group 1E

We rate the Volkswagen Up as one of the best small cars around. It's full of character, looks good and has an impressive interior. And while this is a relatively cheap car, it still has that quality Volkswagen feel inside. It's also really good fun to drive, even at a sedate pace.

It's not as cheap to buy as its counterparts the SEAT Mii and Skoda Citigo and but it is cheaper to insure with several 1.0-litre Start/Stop models, including the Take Up and Move Up versions, in Group 1 and available with the ASG semi-automatic gearbox.

Smart Forfour – Group 1E

You'd be forgiven for thinking Smart had disappeared a few years ago. The offshoot of Mercedes-Benz that made such an impact with its tiny two-seater City Coupe seemed to go on a very long holiday. However, it's now back and with some decent new cars too.

The Forfour is Smart's own version of the Renault Twingo and has the same unusual rear-engined layout. That means an amazingly tight turning circle and plenty of room inside for a car that's less than 3.5 metres long. It's cheap to run too with economical engines while the 1.0-litre 71PS models are either Group 1 or 2 insurance.

Kia Rio – Group 2E

If you're after a good value, comfortable and well put together small car, the Rio is easy to recommend. It's also easy to drive and all models come well equipped with air conditioning, electric windows and Bluetooth. You certainly get plenty for you money, along with the usual long Kia warranty.

The latest Rio is also impressively cheap to insure, the Rio 2 model with the 1.4 CRDi engine is Group 2, something few other hatches this size can match.

6

SEAT Mii – Group 2E

The Mii is sometimes the forgotten model of the Volkswagen trio that includes the Up and Citigo. But it represents good value for money alongside its counterparts with plenty of deals and special offers available. So even though the list price may be more than an equivalent Citigo - they seem to swap places for 'who is cheapest' on a regular basis - you're more likely to negotiate a deal on a SEAT.

Sitting in Group 2 means it's cheap as chips to insure yet is still really good fun to drive, despite its modest 1.0 engine with 60PS. You can get either a Design or FR-Line trim - both in the same Group 2.

7

Dacia Logan MCV – Group 2E

The only estate car to feature in this list, the Logan represents amazing value for money. After all, you get a huge boot, good economy and a very comfortable car with prices starting at less than £7500. You only have to get past the fact Dacia keeps sticking the letters MCV - which stands for Maximum Capacity Vehicle - after the name. We think they just mean 'estate'.

Go for the 1.0-litre SCe petrol engine and you'll be in Group 2 insurance. And that's not confined to the back to basics Access model either - with the better equipped Ambiance in the same group.

Skoda Citigo – Group 2E

Well this looks familiar. It's no surprise that the Citigo is as cheap to insure as the SEAT Mii, however, there are more versions of the Citigo that sit in Group 2, including the ASG automatic. It's not the best automatic though - that's because it's an automated manual rather than a true auto and so takes some getting used to.

The basic S model is a bit sparse but opting for an SE, Monte Carlo or Colour Edition doesn't push the insurance rating up at all. It's powered by the same characterful 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine as the Mii which is proving pretty frugal in Real MPG. No surprise that this is a car we recommend to lots of first time drivers.

9

Ford Fiesta – Group 2E

There are few small hatchbacks on the market that come close to matching the new Fiesta for all round handling, comfort and quality. The Fiesta is driver-friendly, spacious and great fun on the road. Standard kit is also decent, with base models getting air conditioning, Bluetooth and a body coloured rear spoiler. Sporty.

If you want to keeping insurance costs to a minimum, you'll want the entry-level Style model with the 70PS 1.1-litre petrol engine. It's not fast but that makes it an ideal car for younger drivers who have recently passed their test. Less power, less trouble...

Hyundai i10 - Group 2E

If you want a good quality small car that's cheap to run then you can't go wrong with the Hyundai i10. Go for the 1.0-litre engine and it sits in Group 2, even if you opt for a Premium trim model. Plus of course, it comes with Hyundai's five year warranty.

We think the i10 is an excellent small car which isn't just meant for round town. Of course, it's ideal as a runabout but it's not out of its depth on the motorway with impressive refinement for a small hatch. It may not have the character of something like the Volkswagen Up, but the smart money would always go on the i10.

 Toyota Yaris – Group 2E

When it comes to reliability you can't go wrong with a Toyota. The brand is quite rightly recognised as one of the most dependable. Toyota dealers also have a well deserved reputation for good customer service so it's easy to see what attracts so many people to a Toyota.

Rather unusually, the Yaris is actually cheaper to insure than the smaller Toyota Aygo. Whereas the smaller car starts at Group 5, the Yaris 1.0 VVT-i Active is Group 2 - a very low rating for a hatchback this size.

The latest Ibiza represents an important step forward for SEAT. Smart, stylish and backed by a range of brilliant petrol engines, the Ibiza feels more grown up and better rounded than ever before, while its huge boot and refined ride provide a workmanlike simplicity that is lacking with many of its rivals.

It's also considerably cheaper to insure than its Volkswagen Polo counterpart with 1.0 MPI models in S, SE and SE Technology trim rated in Group 2 insurance.

Vauxhall Corsa – Group 2E

This Vauxhall Corsa may not be actually 'new' - in fact it's pretty much a revamp of the previous one - but Vauxhall has made some key changes, particularly inside with a big step up in interior quality and design. The changes have managed to take what was an ageing car and give it a new lease of life.

As with all Vauxhall models, there's a baffling number of trim levels. On one hand this is good - there's lots of choice - but for many it just soon becomes confusing. What you do need to know is that the cheapest model to insure is the Sting version (which gets stripes on the bonnet) and comes with a 75PS 1.4-litre engine.

Renault Twingo – Group 2E

Remember when the Renault Twingo was one of those funny cars you only saw when you went on holiday to France? Well no more. The Twingo is now a bona fide sold-properly-in-the-UK car and is actually a joint venture with the Smart ForFour.

We think the Twingo is the better looking of the two but if you're after the cheapest to insure model that's the basic Expression which comes with plastic wheel trims and no air conditioning. In other words not the one in the picture above. That's purely for illustration purposes...

Skoda Fabia – Group 2E

Most people describe the Fabia as 'practical' or 'sensible' but there's far more to it than that. Because - and you may have to whisper this - the Fabia is actually good to drive. We'd even go as far as to say enjoyable. It's also better value than the Polo, with which it shares much.

It's considerably cheaper to insure, with the 1.0 60 S model rated at Group 2. It's hardly a ball of fire but even if you opt for the 75PS version of the same engine in SE L trim, it's still only Group 3.

Kia Picanto – Group 3E

The latest Kia Picanto is affordably-priced, well-equipped, surprisingly practical and great fun to drive, making it a very good buy in our books. That said, insurance ratings have gone up compared to its predecessor and so only one model is in Group 3 -  the 1.0 GT-Line with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Like all Kia models, the Picanto comes with a seven-year warranty but if you want even more proof of Kia's reliability, the Picanto was the highest ranked city car in the 2016 JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study. Get you, Picanto.

Smart Fortwo – Group 3E

Smart has stuck with the same formula that made the original 'city car' so recognisable. So the latest Fortwo is still a two seater with that distinctive shape, an incredibly tight turning circle and tiny turbocharged engines. Some things have improved thankfully, not least the duff automated manual gearbox which has been replaced by a proper dual-clutch auto. There's now even a manual.

The Fortwo is cheap when it comes to insurance with the 0.9-litre engine rated as Group 3. However, a word of warning when it comes to economy. Real MPG shows that owners are not getting anywhere near the claimed economy figures, meaning the Fortwo may not be as cheap to run as it looks on paper.

Dacia Sandero – Group 3E

If one manufacturer has proven that being prudent is now 'on trend' it's Dacia. Rather than being viewed as a cheap brand, Dacia has managed to position itself as the motoring equivalent of an austerity budget. And it's finding lots of fans too.

The Sandero made headlines when it went on sale thanks to a list price of less than £6k. Although the basic Access model that money gets you is indeed basic. You'll need to brush up on your eye-spy skills for those long journeys as it doesn't even get a radio...

Fiat Panda - Group 3E

Never one to rush things, this Fiat Panda is only the third generation of the model which debuted in 1980. Back when Pac Man was new and people listened to Abba even when they weren't at a wedding. It's kind of been overshadowed by the Fiat 500 of late though.

However, the pesky 500 hasn't made it onto this list - the lowest rating being a Group 7. But the perky and practical Panda is cheaper to insure. The best model when it comes to saving money is the 1.2-litre petrol in either Pop or Lounge trim, both Group 3.

Vauxhall Viva - Group 3E

Vauxhall brought back a name from its past for its city car - which effectively replaced the Agila in the range. Sadly this hatchback doesn't have the same charm as the original Viva, but it does have some redeeming features, not least its lengthy list of standard equipment.

We did expect it to be cheaper to insure though, given that rivals like the far superior Volkswagen Up Group 1. In comparison the Viva is a Group 3 - and only on the entry SE model.

Renault Clio - Group 3E

It may not be the newest small hatch on sale - in fact it's one of the elder statesmen - but the Renault Clio still has plenty of appeal. It's a good looking car for one - and the styling has aged well - although the driving position is not that great.

It's much cheaper to ensure than many other hatchbacks of similar size though with the 1.2-litre engine in both Expression and Play trim sitting in Group 3.

Vauxhall Adam – Group 3E

Given the success of cars like the MINI, Fiat 500 and the Audi A1, it’s easy to see why Vauxhall came up with the Adam. Think of it as a Vauxhall Corsa but in a posh dress and with its best make up on. Like its rivals, there's lots of scope for personalising and indeed ruining your brand new Adam. Like who knew that indivdually coloured alloy wheel spokes were a thing...

It's cheap to run and while not the best small car in terms of handling or driver enjoyment, it's nontheless cheap to insure with Adam Jam, Glam, Slam models all Group 3 if you choose the 1.2i 70PS engine.

Fiat Qubo – Group 3E

It's no looker - and you won't be massively surprised to find out it's based on a van - but what the Qubo lacks in street cred it makes up for with space and practicality. It's a five-seater with acres of space and a hardwearing interior. As a no nonsense family car, the Qubo has plenty going for it.

Drop down all the seats and you can cram in half of Ikea, well the bits that aren't too long anyway. Plus it has carpark friendly and child-hitting-the-car-next-door proof sliding doors. It's just about the right side of cheap and cheerful although the likes of the Dacia Duster make the Qubo seem expensive.

Hyundai i20 - Group 4E

If one car shows how far Hyundai has come in recent years it's the i20. This Fiesta-sized hatch is a seriously underrated small car that does everything you want of it - and does it well. It's ideal around town, more than happy on the motorway, cheap to run and comes well equipped as standard. Chuck in Hyundai's five-year warranty and it's a no brainer.

The cheapest to insure Group 4 models are the S and S Air versions - as the name suggests the latter gets air conditioning. That's with the 1.2-litre petrol engine which gives decent enough performance around town.

MG3 - Group 4E

The MG3 is a certainly not an obvious choice as a small car. The once famous British name is these days a very different proposition. For starters it's under Chinese ownership - although the company is very keen to point out that UK cars are still 'assembled' in Longbridge. Although the cynical may think that means just sticking some badges on in a big shed in the Midlands...

What the MG3 does offer is more for your money than the competition. It has a more powerful engine than most - it's 1.5-litre petrol developing 106PS - and cheap insurance with all models sitting in Group 4.
