I wonder if you could spare the time to help us select our next car please. I am 75 and my wife is 62. We have previously owned a 3 Series BMW, and Audi A3 but currently have a 5 year old Audi A2 petrol manual with 47,000 miles on the clock and a 6 year old VW Bora petrol auto with 76,000 miles on the clock. We no longer do long distance European touring. Our normal motoring is trips of 20 odd miles. We do however drive to Cornwall three or four times a year from the North West. We wish to have one car only and our budget is around £10,000 plus the value of the existing two cars. We were wondering about the BMW 1 series or the Mercedes A Class. Either ex-demo or up to 12 months old with low mileage, with a diesel engine. We are looking for, like most people I suppose, good performance, comfortable drive, reliability, and economy. Any suggestions both on where to purchase the new and dispose of the old however would be most welcome.

The 1 Series may be a bit low and hard riding. No reason not to go for a Mercedes A160 CDI CVT auto. I saw one at auction yesterday: Mercedes A160CDI Special 5-dr CVT, 2006/56, 42k miles £8,600s Road test and car-by-car breakdown entry at www.honestjohn.co.uk
