Wint some, lose some

I am considering investing in winter tyres for the coming season. Clearly the driving wheels are critical, but as it is much more costly, is it important to fit them all round? If so, can you please explain why?

The only advice you will get from me is to fit them to all four wheels the sake of stability, particularly when descending hills on snow and ice.
