Which are the best car insurance companies according to readers of this site?
More than 10,000 of you told us about your experiences for the Honest John Satisfaction Index so we can reveal the car insurance companies that offer the most complete package, not necessarily just the lowest price.
Some of the insurers here may not be the cheapest, but it is worth considering what you get for your money including the quality of service. Your responses gave us useful insights into the overall customer experience, including making a claim.
Over 80 insurers were rated in the Satisfaction Index and the good news is that more than two thirds received a score of more than 7.5 out of 10, suggesting an improvement over the 2017 results. The top two from last year remained the same, with NFU Mutual and John Lewis Insurance taking gold and silver once again with Santander moving into the third-place spot. The top 10 insurers all rated over 8 out of 10 too, while bringing up the rear were Esure, Swinton and Hastings Direct in last place,

NFU Mutual
Car Insurance Satisfaction Score 9.20
NFU Mutual must be doing something right as they have taken the top spot once again, rated the best car insurer in the Honest John Satisfaction Index. Its overall rating of 9.20 is almost identical to last year, showing that their high scores are no fluke.
Even better is that NFU Mutual's prices are competitive too, with an average premium of £362 putting it near the top of the charts despite its highly-rated customer service.

John Lewis Insurance
Car Insurance Satisfaction Score 9.02
An improved performance for John Lewis, who retain their place as the second highest-rated car insurer. The satisfaction score is significantly higher compared to last year, and it achieves the double hit of reducing its average premium cost compared to 2017 too; at £335 on average it is even better than first-placed NFU Mutual. Better luck next year Mr Lewis.

A new entry into the 2018 top 10 for Santander, who have proved popular with the readers of HonestJohn.co.uk for good customer service and competitive premiums - the average premium of £345 was lower than overall winner NFU Mutual.

LV Insurance (Liverpool Victoria)
Car Insurance Satisfaction Score 8.70
Another impressive showing from Liverpool Victoria, who stayed in fourth spot in the Honest John Satisfaction Index despite increasing its overall score compared to last year. LV were also one of just a handful of insurers who achieved a lowest recorded premium of £100, which also helped it achieve a low average premium too.

One of several services offered by Sainsbury's Bank, its car insurance performed well in the Satisfaction Survey achieving an impressive score of 8.51. The average premium price was one of the higher recorded in the top ten, but strong customer service and incentives such as Nectar discounts and bonus points helped its overall score.
