Geneva Motor Show 2019: Polestar 2 has 310-mile electric range

The Polestar 2 has been launched at the Geneva Motor Show. The high performance EV will go head-to-head with the Tesla Model 3 and cover 310 miles on a single charge, while prices are expected to start at £34,000. 

The Polestar electric performance car brand separated from parent firm Volvo in 2017, with the launch its 600PS hybrid GT car. However, with prices for the Polestar 1 starting at £135,000, demand is expected to be limited.

The latest offering, the Polestar 2, will cost significantly less with the carmaker telling HonestJohn.co.uk that prices will start in the region of 59,900 euros - around £51,500 - when it goes on sale early in 2020. After the first 12 months on sale, an entry-level model will be introduced for €39,900 (£34,000).

Based on the same mechanical platform as the Volvo XC40, the Polestar 2 uses two electric motors and a 78 kWh battery, with a 27-module battery pack integrated into the floor.

The all-wheel drive electric powertrain in the Polestar 2 produces 408PS and 660Nm of torque, which translates to a 0-62mph acceleration time of less than five seconds.

An optional Performance Pack will improve driving dynamics, says Polestar, with Ohlins dampers, Brembo brakes and unique 20-inch forged wheels.

It’ll be one of the first cars on sale with an infotainment system powered by Android; this brings embedded Google services, including Google Assistant, Google Maps (with support for electric vehicles) and the Google Play Store.

In common with all Polestar cars, the Polestar 2 will only be available for ordering online. Unlike the Polestar 1, it’ll be available in both left- and right-hand drive.
