Land Rover Defender 'Tomb Raider' in Historics March 12th Auction

Published 30 January 2016

Today, the last day of the last week of Land Rover Defender production, a 1986 Defender 110 double cab sold for $103,400 at Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale, Arizona. On March 12th Historics offers the opportunity to buy the 2001 Tomb Raider prototype at Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, Surrey.

'Tomb Raider' originated with an action-adventure video game focusing on adventurer Lara Croft who travels the globe searching for lost artifacts and infiltrating dangerous tombs and ruins.

The movie, starring Angelina Joli, also starred some special edition Land Rovers in which she penetrated the Cambodian jungle to defeat the forces of greed (Hun Sen excepted).

The movie was a massive hit and the Land Rovers themselves also became a cult icon. As a result, Land Rover took a standard double-cab 110 Defender off the production line and gave it to their 'Special Vehicles Department'. With over £7,000 worth of additional equipment and some custom paintwork, the Limited Edition Tomb Raider Land Rover was born, and the cars in the sale are the original prototypes, authenticated by the fact that the bulkheads inside the engine bays are still dark green, as on the original production car. A further 100 units of the 110" Defender and 100 of the 90" Defender were subsequently built and sold. This original pre-production example (1 of 2) however, had been lost, until now.

Painted dark metallic grey with special badging and details, the Tomb Raider came equipped with a roof-rack, additional spot lights, front and rear remote winches, bull-bars and snorkel as well as uprated shock absorbers and springs, privacy glass and a category 1 alarm/immobiliser & tracker. This, the very first Tomb Raider, also has upgraded quilted leather seating, air-conditioning and the exclusive Tomb Raider plaque.

Estimated at just £16,000 - £22,000, this would appear to be conservative in the light of the $104,100 achieved by a similarly equipped Land Rover Defender 110 at Barrett Jackson, Srocksdale today.
